Legendary NBA player Dikembe Mutombo established his foundation to give back to his native country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and improve healthcare, education, and quality of life.

While Dikembe’s inspiring story had attracted media attention, the Foundation had never produced a piece to document its journey and accomplishments. They also needed materials to help them expand their donor base.

We met at their offices in Atlanta to map out the content strategy for an identity brochure, paired with a separate annual report and a pocket-sized version to give out at events.

Our writer found a wealth of inspiring stories to tell, from Dikembe’s personal vision for the foundation; to the extraordinary achievement of constructing a state-of-the-art hospital and research center in the capital city of Kinshasa; and their many community initiatives and partnerships. We featured emotionally-moving profiles about people whose lives had been transformed — by walking again, seeing again, hearing again, or simply recovering in a part of the world where the perception used to be that a hospital was a place where you go to die, but now you come back to live and thrive.

To enhance the narrative visually, we researched Kuba cloth patterns from the region where Dikembe grew up, supported the foundation’s photography by sourcing images of vibrant life in the community, presented maps and meaningful statistics, and designed a historical timeline to run through the brochure.
